KILLER DILLERS...KINGS OF CLARINET

NEW JOHN DIMON SHOW

Leading a 16-member orchestra and top vocalists, Toronto’s foremost jazz clarinetist Ross Wooldridge headlines this all-new music review saluting the artistry of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Both acclaimed clarinetist led popular Big Bands and smaller groups from 1930 onward and this show illustrates why their memorable, unique music is still popular.

The show is presented in two parts with both featuring the 16-member orchestra plus, within, a small jazz combo and a Lionel Hampton-style vibraphonist.

Part one belongs to Benny Goodman, the man credited with launching the Swing Era in 1938, when he performed in New York's Carnegie Hall, and his history-making performance at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles. Dubbed “The King of Swing” Goodman’s hits include Sing, Sing, Sing, Let’s Dance, Don’t Be That Way, One O’Clock Jump, Goody, Goody, King Porter Stomp, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and countless other “killer dillers.” Goodman's music continues to find its audience among the young and old alike.

Part two spotlights the music of Artie Shaw whose breakthrough hit Begin the Beguine catapulted him into the ranks of top bandleaders and earned him the title "King of the Clarinet." Shaw's recordings, which include hits as Frensi, Stardust, Moonglow, Dancing In the Dark, Carioca, S’Wonderful, and Concerto For Clarinet, sold thousands and transformed him into a music icon. In the 50s, Shaw formed Gramercy 5 a combo whose music and style maintains an amazingly high degree of popularity to this day.

As Big Band jazz clarinetists and bandleaders, Goodman and Shaw have no peer. Their flawless solo improvisations, unique playing style and uncompromising standard of excellence opened a new epoch in American popular music. This “Killer Diller” review captures the magic, excitement and musical roots of the fabled Swing Era.

A dazzling two-hour high-energy music-dance review filled with talented vocalists, dazzling footwork, beautiful showgirls, lavish costumes and spectacular production numbers. The show salutes entertainment’s brightest stars and most extravagant stage shows.

Production numbers include songs from Broadway blockbusters and the mega hits of legendary Las Vegas entertainers. From the Broadway stage we include music from Cabaret, Chicago, Cats, Lion King, Evita, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Les Miz, Jekyll and Hyde, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Wicked. Also included are songs made popular by the superstars of the Strip…Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, Tom Jones, Johnny Mathis, Barry White and Marilyn Monroe. Songs featured include No Business Like Show Business, Luck Be A Lady Tonight, I Get A Kick Out of You, Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, Circle of Life, All That Jazz, Memory, Popular, Cabaret, Delilah and Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend. This fast paced review consists of the memorable hits emanating from the stages of Broadway and the glitters stars of Vegas.

Dance numbers include a sexy chorus line of ten “Stardust” showgirls in sparkling costumes and feather headdresses; a kick-line of classy dancers in top hats and tails for New York, New York; A high-kickin’ “Can Can” salute to the Follies Bergere; and other numbers featuring glamorous dancers performing various Vegas-style numbers. Showgirl costumes, which make this show a visual delight, consist of elaborate feathered headdresses, sequined costumes, topped off by sparkling rhinestones.

This entertaining show demonstrates what glamour, flash and GLITZ is all about!

Priscilla Wright and her Big Band, under the direction of Rosemary Galloway, performed to a full capacity audience at the newly renovated Mel Lastman Square on Sunday, August 19, 2007 at 7:30pm.
